As a parent, you want to protect your kids from all kinds of harm, including skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and it’s largely preventable. By teaching your children healthy habits early on, you can help prevent them from developing skin cancer later in life.

1. Use Sunscreen ☀️

One of the most effective ways to protect your children’s skin from the harmful effects of the sun is to use sunscreen. Make sure you choose a sunscreen that is at least SPF 30 and is labeled “broad-spectrum,” meaning it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours (or immediately after swimming or sweating).

2. Seek Shade 🌳

Another way to minimize exposure to the sun is to seek shade when possible. Encourage your kids to play under a tree or a shaded playground. If you’re at the beach or a park, bring an umbrella or tent to provide shade.

3. Wear Protective Clothing 👕

Clothing offers another layer of protection against the sun. Choose clothing that covers as much skin as possible, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants. Look for clothing made from tightly woven fabrics or with UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) built-in. Don’t forget to also wear a hat and sunglasses to protect the face and eyes.

4. Avoid Peak Sun Hours ☀️

The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Try to plan outdoor activities before or after these peak hours to minimize sun exposure. If you must be outside during these times, make sure to use extra protection, such as sunscreen and shade.

5. Set a Good Example 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Children often learn by example, so make sure you set a good one. Practice sun safety yourself by wearing protective clothing and sunscreen. Encourage your kids to do the same and make it a regular habit. It’s never too early to start teaching your children about healthy behaviors.
