Are you someone who loves gardening but is short on space? Don’t worry! With vertical gardens, you can turn any small space into a lush green sanctuary.

Here are some DIY planters and trellises, along with some tips, to help you create your own garden oasis 🌱

Vertical Garden Planters

Fabric Pocket Planters

One of the most inexpensive ways to create a vertical garden is to use a fabric pocket planter. These planters come in various sizes and can be easily hung on a wall. You can plant a variety of plants in each pocket, from herbs to flowers to succulents.

To create a fabric pocket planter, you’ll need a piece of sturdy fabric, scissors, and a sewing machine (or needle and thread). Cut pieces of fabric into rectangles, fold them in half, and sew up the two sides. Next, sew horizontal lines to create pockets. Finally, attach grommets to the top corners and hang the planter on a hook.

Recycled Bottle Planters

Don’t throw away those plastic bottles! You can turn them into a vertical garden. The simplest way is to cut open one side of the bottle, make several small holes on the other side for drainage and planting, and then hang them on a wall. You can also use a wooden frame to hold the bottles in place.

To make a more sophisticated bottle planter, cut the bottle in half, fill the top half with soil, and plant your herbs or flowers in it. Then, attach the bottom half of the bottle to the top half with a piece of string, so you can water the top half without disturbing the roots.

Vertical Garden Trellises

Ladder Trellis

If you’re looking for a more aesthetically pleasing trellis, you can create a ladder trellis. All you need is a wooden ladder and some twine. Start by removing any unnecessary parts of the ladder, such as the hinges or bolts, and sand it down. Tie one end of the twine to the bottom rung of the ladder and weave it in and out of the rungs until you reach the top rung.

Once you’ve finished weaving, tie the other end of the twine to the top rung. Now, you have a beautiful and functional trellis that you can use to grow climbing plants like ivy or morning glory.

Pallet Trellis

If you have an old wooden pallet lying around, you can turn it into a trellis. Simply remove any loose boards, sand it down, and then paint or stain it. After that, you can attach it to a wall and begin adding plants.

To create space for planting, hammer small nails or screws into the pallet and attach planters or burlap pockets. Plant your climbing vines in the pockets, and soon, you’ll have a beautiful vertical garden.

Tips for Success

  • Choose plants that thrive in vertical gardens, such as herbs, ferns, and succulents.
  • Consider the placement of your garden. Make sure it gets enough sunlight and is easy to water.
  • Use good quality soil and compost.
  • Water regularly but make sure you don’t overwater, as vertical gardens tend to dry out quickly.
  • Fertilize every few weeks.

Now that you know how to create your very own vertical garden, it’s time to get started! 🌺
