How often have we heard the phrase “man’s best friend”? Our furry friends have always been an essential part of our lives and have often stood by us in tough times. But today, we’re celebrating the brave dogs who went above and beyond to make a difference in our lives and the world around us.

Meet The Brave Dogs

1. Balto: The savior of Nome

Balto, who is now a legend in his own right, led a team of sled dogs on a 674-mile journey through the Alaskan wilderness to deliver medicine to the city of Nome. The city was facing a diphtheria epidemic and was running out of medicine. Balto’s journey became the inspiration for movies, books, and countless stories of bravery.

2. Hachiko: The loyal friend

The touching story of Hachiko is one that has been shared worldwide. Hachiko was an Akita dog who would accompany his owner to the train station every morning and return to greet him every evening. Even after his owner’s death, Hachiko would still wait at the station, in the hope of seeing his beloved master once again. This continued for nearly 10 years, until Hachiko’s own death.

Bravery in Real Life

Apart from the fictional stories we’ve heard, we also have dogs that have exhibited courage in real life. Let’s take a look at some of these dogs.

1. Bretagne: The last 9/11 rescue dog

Bretagne was a golden retriever who was deployed to Ground Zero after the 9/11 attacks. She was only two years old at the time and worked tirelessly with her handler to search for survivors. She was also one of the key reasons why therapy dogs were brought onto the site to provide emotional support to the rescue workers.

Stubby was an American Pit Bull Terrier who served during World War I and is known to be one of the first war dogs. He served in France with his owner and was responsible for alerting his regiment of gas attacks, incoming artillery fire, and even captured a German spy.
