Howdy adventurers! 🤠 If you’re like me, you’re always on the lookout for the next great outdoor destination. Sure, the most popular spots are great, but sometimes we want to find something off the beaten path. After years of exploring and discovering hidden gems, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite outdoor destinations that are often overlooked. So grab your backpacks, lace up your hiking boots, and let’s go!

1. Red River Gorge, Kentucky 🌲

Tucked away in the eastern part of Kentucky lies Red River Gorge, a natural wonderland filled with towering cliffs, waterfalls, and beautiful hiking trails. With over 100 natural arches and a variety of terrain, there’s something for every level of adventurer. From the easy hike to the top of Natural Bridge to the challenging pinnacle rock trail, you’ll find yourself in awe of the natural beauty of this hidden gem.

2. Ohiopyle State Park, Pennsylvania 🏞️

Nestled in the Laurel Highlands of southwestern Pennsylvania lies Ohiopyle State Park, a natural playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Known for its whitewater rapids and natural waterslides, Ohiopyle is a prime destination for kayaking, rafting, and tubing. But that’s not all – the park also boasts over 80 miles of hiking trails, including the challenging Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail, which spans over 70 miles. With something to do in every season, Ohiopyle is a must-see destination for outdoor lovers.

3. Big Fork, Montana 🏔️

If you’re looking for a destination that truly gets you away from it all, Big Fork, Montana is the place for you. With endless miles of trails through pristine wilderness, this area is a dream for backpackers and hikers. You’ll see stunning mountain ranges, crystal clear lakes, and unspoiled forests as you explore this hidden gem. Plus, in the winter, Big Fork offers some of the best snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the country.

4. Congaree National Park, South Carolina 🌳

Most people don’t think of South Carolina when they’re planning an outdoor adventure, but Congaree National Park is a hidden gem that’s not to be missed. This lush, swampy forest is home to a variety of wildlife, including bobcats, deer, and river otters. You can explore miles of hiking trails, paddle through the winding creeks and waterways, or even camp overnight in the park. Congaree is a reminder that there’s still plenty of unspoiled beauty to be found in the eastern United States.

5. Spenceville Wildlife Area, California 🦅

Just a stone’s throw from bustling Sacramento lies the Spenceville Wildlife Area, a surprising oasis of natural beauty and outdoor adventure. This area is a popular destination for birdwatchers, with over 200 species of birds calling it home. But it’s also a great spot for hiking, mountain biking, and even hunting. With its serene beauty and proximity to the city, Spenceville Wildlife Area is a hidden gem that’s worth a visit.
