Roadside Oddities: Exploring Bizarre Attractions You Won't Find Anywhere Else
Hey y’all, it’s your favorite road trip enthusiast here to talk about one of my favorite topics: roadside oddities! You know those weird and wacky attractions you see while driving down the highway? The ones that make you do a double-take and wonder what in the world you just saw? Well, I’ve made it my mission to seek out and explore as many of these bizarre roadside attractions as possible. So buckle up and get ready to hit the road with me!
World’s Largest…Everything 😮
One of the most common types of roadside oddities you’ll come across on your travels are the infamous “World’s Largest” attractions. From giant balls of twine and forks, to statues of dinosaurs and Paul Bunyan, it seems like every town has their own claim to fame when it comes to these oversized monuments.
My personal favorite? The World’s Largest Peanut in Ashburn, Georgia. This 13-foot-tall legume is made of concrete and is a sight to behold. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it.
Unique Museums 🏛️
If you’re in the mood for something a bit more educational (but still weird), check out some of the many unique museums dedicated to bizarre and unusual topics. From the Museum of Osteology in Oklahoma City, which showcases over 300 real skeletons, to the Bunny Museum in California, which boasts over 30,000 bunny-related items, there’s a museum out there for every interest.
One of the most peculiar museums I’ve had the pleasure of visiting is the Museum of Bad Art in Somerville, Massachusetts. As the name suggests, this museum is chock-full of terrible and hilariously bad art. The best part? The museum is always accepting donations, so you could potentially have your own “art” added to their collection.
Quirky Architecture 🏠
Why settle for boring old buildings when you can see some truly unique and quirky architecture? From the world-famous Bubblegum Alley in San Luis Obispo, California, where visitors stick their chewed gum all over the walls, to the Shoe House in Hellam, Pennsylvania, which is exactly what it sounds like, there’s something about strange architecture that just screams “roadside attraction”.
My personal favorite quirky building has to be the Kansas City Public Library’s parking garage, which is covered in giant book spines. As an avid reader, I can’t help but love the way this building combines my two passions: books and road trip adventures.
Unusual Food Stops 🍔
No road trip would be complete without stopping for some weird and wacky eats along the way. From the deep-fried butter at the Iowa State Fair (yes, you read that right), to the macaroni and cheese pizza at the Milltown Pizza Company in Georgia, there’s no shortage of strange and delicious food to be found on your travels.
One of my absolute favorite road trip food stops has to be the Voodoo Doughnut shop in Portland, Oregon. With flavors like Bacon Maple Bar, Grape Ape, and the iconic Voodoo Doll doughnut, this place is a must-visit for any foodie looking for an offbeat dining experience.
